Braille is the tactile writing system read with the fingertips, made from raised dots arranged in six positions. This tool converts between English text and grade-1 Braille, the form that spells every word out letter by letter with no contractions.
It handles capitals, numbers and common punctuation, so you can use it to make labels, study the alphabet, or check what a piece of Braille says. Everything runs privately in your browser.
What is the number sign? Numbers are written with a number sign ( ⠼ ) followed by the letters a–j standing for 1–0, so “1” is ⠼⠁.
How is a capital letter shown? A capital sign ( ⠠ ) is placed before the letter; an all-caps word uses two capital signs.
Does this do contracted (grade-2) Braille? No — it uses grade-1, where every letter is written out in full.
Translate English text into grade-1 Braille and decode Braille back to text, including capitals, numbers and common punctuation. A free educational and accessibility tool.
